Scarlet's Way

Friday 17th January 2025

Bayview Hotel, Gladesville

EP LAUNCH

It was with great pleasure that LiveMusic.Sydney promoted and presented Scarlet’s Way live in concert at the Bayview Hotel, Gladesville on Friday 17th January 2025.   It was a very rare and special treat for Sydneysiders to catch Western Australia’s premier live act before their annual migration up to the Tamworth Country Music Festival.

Having only performed sporadic shows previously on the East Coast, this was a chance to see why this band is so loved in their home state. The launch of their new EP coincided with this show, and Sydneysiders were the first to hear these songs performed in the live setting.

Scarlet’s Way are a phenomenal 5 piece band. Katey Gabel (vocals), Pat Savina (bass), Kim Siragusa (keys), Mike Hagerty Jnr (drums) and Shayne Savic (guitars) all are accomplished musicians in their own right.

Pat, Kim and Mike all play with other bands & musicians in their home state/town while Shayne & Katey often perform together as a duo, so when Scarlet’s Way come together they are a formidable musical force.

What makes them stand out from their peers is that they are not pigeon-holed into one genre, and are 'thinking on their feet' musicians. Many of their songs drift into a tangent of whatever they are feeling at the time, which gives the listener a totally euphoric and 'in the moment experience'.

The freedom to explore the elongated and extended solos by Pat, Kim, Shayne and Mike is really refreshing, and there is nothing like hearing Kim belting the keys in a dual with Shayne on guitar, going hammer and tong, note for note, in a battle for supremacy. Just magic!

“On the pedal" is a standout belter of a rock song which should be on high rotation on the Triple M network. “In another world” is a beautiful ballad that could find a home on Smooth FM, “I can’t help it” has the toes tapping and the hips swinging on 2WS, while “House of Cards” plays on the Country Music Channel on high repeat. These 4 originals highlight the diversity on the EP, and over the next 3 hours we are treated to a sensational night of music. Plenty of vinyl and CD sales throughout the breaks makes this a very successful night.

There are many great moments in the show. A funked up version of the INXS song “Need you tonight”, and the powerhouse thunderous “What do you know” from their Open Road EP,  but it is Katey Gabel who steals the show. Katey’s vocals on “I can’t make you love me” brings a tear to my eye. I don’t think I have ever heard a more beautiful four minutes of music!
